Constipation Protocol for Youngsters

First Two Weeks
Foods to remove from your child’s diet
  • Eliminate all dairy (milk, ice-cream, yogurt, whipped cream, cheese, etc.)
  • Eliminate all refined foods, processed foods, and junk foods
  • No eggs (okay if in something baked, but no scrambled, poached, boiled, etc.)
  • No meat (steak, pork, hamburger, sausages, bacon, luncheon meats, etc.)

Okay

  • Fish is allowed and small amounts of chicken
  • Instead of dairy – choose almond milk or rice milk
  • Increase fibre by eating fresh, raw fruits and dark green vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.
  • Eat lots of salads – at least one big one every day (chicken Caesars and Greek salads are yummy)
  • Have high fibre fruit (berries, watermelon) at breakfast along with a serving of whole grains (non-sweetened cereal, whole grain bread, whole grain waffles)
  • Have berries for snacks often (see snack list for other ideas)
  • Fluids – replace all soft drinks with water. At least 4 glasses of water a day and more for larger or older children.
  • Lots of fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices diluted by 50% with water.
  • Play hard – at least 30 minutes every day (walk, bike, swim, run, skateboard, etc.)
At the same time each day – preferably in the morning, encourage your child to sit on the toilet with their feet raised on a step or box that raises the knees slightly above the seat. Don’t allow feet to dangle. Raising the feet allows the colon to resume a more natural position. Children should sit for 15 minutes. If you they don’t go within 15 minutes, they can get up and go on with their day. Try again after supper!

Prune Smoothie (way better than it sounds)

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ¼ cup pitted prunes
  • 1 banana, peeled
Using blender, process almond milk, prunes and banana until smooth.
